Hawks steal one at MSG, Timberwolves even series in Denver and more from Monday’s slate.

Donovan Mitchell (30 pts, 7 reb, 5 ast) starred as the Cavaliers took Game 2 over the Raptors 115-105 to open the night, earning a 2-0 series lead.

The Hawks rallied in the final moments behind CJ McCollum (32 pts), winning the fourth quarter 28-15 to defeat the Knicks 107-106 on the road and even the series at 1-1.

The Timberwolves won a back-and-forth battle in Denver, coming back from 19 down to defeat the rival Nuggets 119-114 and tie their series 1-1.

What we know after Monday’s games:

‘Minnesota! A shocker, here in Denver’

The Timberwolves fought back to defeat the Nuggets 119-114 in a battle between familiar Western Conference foes, coming back from 19 down to prompt the capping call from Michael Grady.

Jamal Murray (30 pts) had a chance to cut the lead to one with 11 seconds to go, but his shot was long.

Donte DiVincenzo (16 pts) grabbed the board, prompting a give-and-go fast break that he capped with a game-sealing slam.

“It’s 1-1. There’s no driver’s seat,” said Anthony Edwards (30 pts, 10 reb, 3 3PM). “Hopefully, our fans rattle them a little bit when they come to our crib. We’ll be ready.”

The Nuggets and Timberwolves have played 30 times since 2022-23. They played with the focus built by familiarity tonight, trading huge plays down the stretch.

Nikola Jokić (24 pts, 15 reb, 8 ast) was brilliant in defeat.

Delivering some trademark hustle and spark, Donte DiVincenzo (11 pts) assisted Jaden McDaniels with a transition dime, then scored a fast break layup of his own to send Minnesota to a timeout.

Nuggets holding slim lead

107-104 with 5:54 to go in the fourth quarter.

Anthony Edwards (30 pts) and Julius Randle (20 pts, 5 ast) put up the last four Timberwolves points, while Christian Braun (14 pts) prompted a Minnesota timeout with a big driving jam.

Takeaways: Raptors-Cavaliers, Game 2

NBA.com’s Shaun Powell shares his observations after the Cavaliers took Game 2, defending home court before heading up north.

“Given the stakes and the situation, this served as the high-water mark for the Mitchell-Harden backcourt tandem which was formed at the trade deadline a few months ago. They were fluid and forceful and a handful Monday for the Raptors and really through both games.

This was precisely what the Cavaliers hoped for when they fused these two stars together and now they’re reaping the benefits of that decision. Both players are capable of going downhill and attacking the rim for layups or fouls, or shooting from 15 feet and beyond. It’s a combination that’s tough to defend, even for a decent group of Toronto defenders…

There was a stretch where Mitchell had 17 points in 20 minutes and Harden 19 in 19, an impactful 1-2 punch.”

‘We’ve got a heavyweight fight’

Austin Rivers said as Nikola Jokić (18 pts, 11 reb, 7 ast) finished a tough finish in the post through Jaden McDaniels, drawing and converting the and-one to give the Nuggets an 85-79 lead with 4:13 to go in the third.

These teams have played more than anyone in the NBA since 2022-23. It feels like it tonight — both are giving no quarter.

The Timberwolves will look to find something from Rudy Gobert down the stretch. The veteran center has not yet scored and is a team-low -10.

The Nuggets led by as many as 19 before the Timberwolves rallied back, taking an eight point lead of their own with two minutes to go.

Denver then closed on an 8-0 run, capped by a 51-foot Jamal Murray (23 pts) buzzer-beater from well behind half court.

“When we have a lead, cherish it,” said Tim Hardaway Jr. (14 pts).

Anthony Edwards (20 pts) and Julius Randle (18 pts) powered the offense for Minnesota.

Anthony Edwards (3 pts), who was questionable with right knee inflammation, is limping some after colliding with Nikola Jokić (3 reb, 4 ast) in the back court, but staying in the game.

Search for inspiration, Chris Finch just put in Bones Hyland, looking for some creativity off the bounce.

Hawks defeat Knicks to even series 1-1

In a dramatic finish, Mikal Bridges’ game-winning jumper was just short, as the Hawks stormed back in the fourth quarter to defeat the Knicks.

CJ McCollum (32 pts) inspired the Hawks with his play, drawing the ire of the Madison Square Garden crowd in the win.

“I’m just here to compete, and here to compete at the highest level,” said McCollum afterwards. “We’re a tough group. We’re young, but we’re learning by the day.”

Jalen Brunson (29 pts) led six Knicks in double figures.

Emotions high in New York

“(Hawks) need some fight, need some life,” said Jamal Crawford. “This is where vets matter.”

Alvarado picked up McCollum on the next possession, dogging him full-court as the crowd roared its approval.

McCollum waved to Ben Stiller and Spike Lee, sitting front row in the Garden, afterwards.

Cavaliers hold off Raptors’ challenge to take Game 2

Cleveland defeats Toronto 115-105, winning Game 2.

“The Cavaliers have been the best version of themselves in Games 1 and 2,” said Mark Followill. “Now, the series moves north.”

James Harden (28 pts, 5 reb, 4 ast, 5 stl), Donovan Mitchell (30 pts, 7 reb, 5 ast) and Evan Mobley (25 pts, 8 reb on 11-of-13 shooting) starred in front of the Rocket Arena crowd.

It was the fourth time in the Cavs’ Playoff history that they’ve had three players drop 25+ points.

“Continue to be mentally strong,” said Mitchell of the Cavaliers’ future plans.

Scottie Barnes (26 pts) and RJ Barrett (22 pts) led the way for the Raptors in defeat.

The Cavs are big enough to bother the Raptors at basically every position — one of the main advantages of the James Harden-for-Darius Garland swap — and experienced in the Playoffs.

Harden, Mitchell and Allen are still the only Cavaliers to score, as Cleveland methodically works its way to a 19-12 lead with 4:02 to go in the first quarter.

Neither Brandon Ingram nor Scottie Barnes has scored so far for Toronto.
